Lectionary: 115
FIRST READING (1 Kings 19:9a, 11–13a)
“Stand upon the mount before the Lord."
A reading from the first Book of Kings
In those days:
There Elijah went into a cave and stayed all night.
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” Then the Lord passed by. A very strong wind tore through the mountains. It broke the rocks into pieces before the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake, there was a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a quiet, gentle sound. When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his coat. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave.
The word of the Lord.
SECOND READING (Romans 9:1–5)
“I would willingly be condemned if it would help my brother.”
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans
Brethren:
I speak the truth in Christ. I am not lying. My conscience tells me by the Holy Spirit that this is true. I have great sorrow and always feel much sadness. I wish I could help my brothers, my people, my own race. I would even wish that I were cursed and cut off from Christ if that would help them. They are the people of Israel. God chose them to be his children. He gave them the glory of God and the agreements. He gave them the law of Moses and the right way of worship. And he gave his promises to them. They are the descendants of our great fathers. And Christ himself was born from their family. He is the one who is over everything. Praise God forever! Amen.
The word of the Lord.

GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22–33
“Bid me to come to you on the water.”
✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matthew 14:22–33
[After the crowd was satisfied,]
Then Jesus made the followers get into the boat. He told them to go ahead of him to the other side of the lake. Then he stayed to tell the people goodbye. After he sent them away, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. It was late, and Jesus was there alone. By this time the boat was already far away on the lake. The boat was being pushed by waves because the wind was blowing against it.
Between three and six o’clock in the morning, Jesus came to them. He was walking on the water. When his followers saw him walking on the water, they were afraid. They said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out in fear. But Jesus quickly spoke to them. He said, “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Peter said, “Lord, if it is really you, then tell me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come.”
And Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when Peter saw the wind and the waves, he became afraid and began to sink. He shouted, “Lord, save me!”
Then Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter. Jesus said, “Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?”
After they got into the boat, the wind became calm. Then those who were in the boat worshiped Jesus and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
