We pray for those who prepare our legislation and make our laws: that they may know when the time has come for change and when it is time to stand firm. Lord, hear us.

15th Sunday Yr C: We often ask questions, particularly about faith because deep down we want to justify ourselves, our self-righteousness, our secret racism, or snobbishness, like the lawyer in the Gospel. Jesus enters in a dialogue with him, and He does with us as well, letting us come to our conclusions, occasionally giving us a push by saying, ‘Go and do the same yourself. Sometimes we Christians get impatient with ourselves that we are not always living out the life of love, feeling that the priest and the Levite are still within us. Our impatience with ourselves is often because of the commercialized society we live in, which demands quick results. We are conditioned by advertising techniques: we expect that fast foods will not only be fast but nutritious, and so on. Perfection in love is usually not so instant. It is well to remember that the guidance in Deuteronomy was given while still on the way to the Promised Land and that the parable of the Lord is told while the disciples are still making their way with him to Jerusalem. The journey element can remind us that love and charity are part of the journey of faith. And, as with many journeys, there are stops and even wrong turns. It is when we get bogged down at such stages that we lose our sense of direction and our infinite capacity to love. Today the Lord invites us to be good Samaritans first to ourselves, and with others who are in need. We might wonder what the Samaritan had to gain personally from his act of charity. The answer, in material terms, is precisely nothing. The whole point is that love, which is real and true, is disinterested in gains. May we grow in the likeness of Christ.
