Reading 13th Sunday of the year C
13th Sunday Yr C: Scholars tell us that it was unusual for Jesus to journey to Jerusalem through the Samaritan area and even stranger for him to expect hospitality there. There was a long, hostile history between Jews and Samaritans. We must thus conclude that what Jesus was doing was beginning to open space for friendship, seek ways of sowing reconciliation, and reversing the toxic patterns of a debilitating history. In a world still yoked by inequality, divisions, and hostilities, we, like Jesus, are challenged to pioneer new ways of creating cultures of brotherhood and fellowship. James' and John's desire for revenge were spurned by Jesus, and it is also not an option for those who seek to bring reconciliation, justice, and healing to divided communities. Jesus' words and actions remind us very poignantly that what has been lost by destructive powers must be recovered by love. This task falls on each one of us today.
