Hi! I'm Dr. Al (an abbreviated version of my full name, Alberto Luis). My academic journey started at Instituto Cultural Helenico in Mexico City where I studied Art, and it was a great starting point at a time when I needed to get away and find myself like so many teens coming out of high school - it was there that I met a good friend of mine that encouraged me to enter the field of Psychology, we were both fascinated with studying and understanding people, so I came home to California to start my undergraduate studies in Psychology at California State University, Long Beach. I dug into research and family therapy, continued pursuing my passions, and kept working towards that goal of understanding why people do what they do. My graduate studies led me to Pepperdine University where I finished my Master's degree first where I focused on researching the effects of aggression in video games, followed by my doctorate studies (Psy.D. which is just the Psychology equivalent of a Ph.D.) where I wrote my dissertation on the needs of trainees and novice clinicians.
Every step of the way my goal has been to understand people - to get a grasp of what makes us do what we do, how our behaviors influence us, and how we navigate and interact with the world. My professional growth has focused on guiding parents into managing these behaviors in children and teenagers, and helping young adults manage their own life experience(s) by understanding their own behaviors. As the world continues to spin and we continue developing new and fascinating technology, our behaviors have to catch up, and this is where I've shifted towards understanding the where and why of our online behaviors.
I've joined multiple teams that are inspired by change, motivated to stay ahead of the game, and are driven to navigate the unknown. The COVID pandemic taught us what is important in life, and that includes being adaptable in our personal and professional lives. If you're interested in connecting and recruiting for a project just reach out and say Hi.
What experience I bring:
I have been doing clinical work in psychology for 10 years working with children and teens (Ages 6-18) and young adults (18-35). I have been doing research for the past 10 years, which includes the 2 years of my Master's degree and 4 years of my PsyD/PhD. For the past five years I have been leading a multidisciplinary clinic working with under served communities serving as the elected Chair.
