Vasu Tolia

Award-winning mixed media visual artist.

I create paintings using mixed media - including acrylics, ink, charcoal, oil crayons and paper collage.  I love the instant fulfillment that comes from completing an artwork. I strive to capture the moments, movements of the world and transfer these experiences and emotions into my paintings. My art is constantly evolving to morph from representational to subtle or absolute abstraction on various themes I explore . Although the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else, its application in my art is based on a thought or a moment using shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. I hope to provoke curiosity and interest while permitting myself a sense of freedom of expression and give the viewers, a freedom of interpretation.

As I lay and play with the materials, I infuse my personality in it. I layer marks with charcoal, pastel, and ink with acrylic paint and/or medium with bands.  Ultimately, intuition takes over, happy accidents can happen with brush during planned and unplanned moments. I become the willful maestro making the artwork march to my notes. I may show the brushstrokes or create an ethereal softness, leave hard edges or add texture. Eventually, collision of these in multiple layers creates an emotion, inviting the viewer to feel something real, imagined or both. Creating this hybrid of abstract exploration of nature vs. figure while blurring and keeping some boundaries gives me great joy.
