Description of Artwork:
This canvas was made for the elephant matriarch, the figure who carries a herd's memory, leads its migration, and holds the knowledge that keeps the others alive. At the center, a pomegranate cut open. Its seeds have become eyes, bound shut like a potli. Women are the dream carriers, holding histories close, passing culture from one generation to the next rather than leaving it behind.
Footprints circle the fruit in procession — for the women who walked these paths before us, preserving life with every step, the way a herd retraces its matriarch's route.
The figure in the panel looks ahead with one face and carries what came before her with the other. Vines run from her limbs across both panels, binding them into a single body of cloth.
This work drapes a matriarch in honor of all the women who carried life before us. We are here because of them.
Hargun Mahal Mann is a Bay Area-based visual artist working in painting, ink, and watercolor to explore myth, memory, and inheritance in women's lives. For her, painting is an act of excavation: memory, migration, myth, resistance, and reclamation.
Her path has moved across continents. She trained in Chandigarh, India, then lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, before settling in the Bay Area. Each work begins with a question and resolves through intuition rather than a fixed plan, moving from daily writing and drawing into layered paintings and installation, including a twenty-metre scroll of asemic script.
Mann holds an MFA in Applied Art from Panjab University, Chandigarh. She has exhibited across the Bay Area, including a solo show at Art Ark Gallery, San Jose, and her work has been featured in Content Magazine, the Penn Journal of Arts and Sciences, and Women's United Art Magazine. In 2022, she completed a rotating artist residency with the Cubberley Artist Studio Program.
