Description of Artwork:
The silk painting "Endangered", brings urgent focus to vulnerable species threatened by hunting, habitat loss, and extreme climate change. I felt called to give voice to these extraordinary, defenseless creatures through my art. Rendered across the folds of this hand-painted drape are species fighting for survival: the Hawaiian 'I'iwi (scarlet honeycreeper) and yellow 'Ākepa, the Indian snow leopard, the Bengal tiger, the orangutan, the turquoise blue parrot, Africa’s grey crowned crane, and the giant ibis alongside the Philippine eagle. I invite you to trace the artwork and discover each animal woven into the canvas of silk. The silk was stretched out tight on frames, then gutta resist and silk dyes were used with brushes to create the painting you see. The painting was further made permanent with an extensive professional steaming process. A textural border was attached to give weight to the drape for the elephant draping.
Creating this public installation has been a deeply rewarding journey, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to share my work in the public sphere and bringing focus on elephants. While the project required an immense investment of time, every stroke was a true labor of love. As a wearable art designer, my creative process is usually guided by clients' personal preferences and seasonal color trends. This canvas, however, offered me complete creative freedom—allowing me to return to my artistic roots and express the cherished memories and comfort of my childhood family life.
