03 June, 2026: Scientific publishing has gone "Diamond" a while ago: there are new “Diamond open-access” journals that are free to publish and to read. Most of these journals are run by individual institues or universities (discover Diamond journals in your field here). Our colleague Camille Thomas of the Institute of Geology is very active in running a community-driven journal, he co-founded the Damond Open Access journal Sedimentologika. Check out his recent EGU blog post here.
In this “Diamond” context, SNFS is adapting its funding policy to incite researchers to publish in Diamond open access journals, article processing charges are now limited to 3500 CHF, if your article is more expensive, SNFS wil not pay anything, see here.
Another important evolution is Open Research Europe (ORE), with its publishing platform that is about to transition from a platform for EU project outputs to a platform to publish output from researchers based in any member country (including Switzerland, see the news article here). This will provide a completely new opportunity to share (and peer-review!) scientific results according to highest open science standards.
At a Swiss-scale, a SwissUniversities project is ongoing to lay the ground for coordinated, Swiss-based “Diamond-solutions”, see here.
On a Uni-Bern level, with have the Bern Open Publishing (BOP) service, a publishing platform for the publication of peer-reviewed, periodical Open Access journals, which I just discovered while writing these news, an update will follow.
