~ Context ~
The Ahr region in Germany, exposed to specific geographical and hydrological conditions, was heavily affected by severe floods in July 2021. These floods were caused by exceptional rainfall resulting from a storm and had devastating consequences, including loss of human lives, significant property damage, disruptions in transportation, and substantial economic costs.
Challenge:
How did the geographical, hydrological, and human characteristics of the Ahr River watershed in Germany contribute to the magnitude and consequences of the catastrophic floods in July 2021, and what lessons can be drawn to enhance flood risk management in the region and beyond?
