Introduction - The concept of IC was first ever introduced in the year 1958. Since then the concept of IC and Hybrid IC has reached great technological heights than any other concept and has helped in the miniaturization of a lot of components like mobiles, computers, laptops, and many more devices in the digital world.
A hybrid integrated circuit is a miniaturized electronic circuit which is constructed of individual devices or components such as semiconductor devices like diodes and transistors and passive components such as (resistors, inductors, capacitors) which are bonded to a substrate or a printed circuit board. Thick film technology is most commonly used as an interconnecting medium for a hybrid integrated circuit. Thick film techniques are appropriate for electronic instrumentation fabrication when miniaturization, high reliability, and cost-effective limited production are required.
The use of screen printed thick film interconnect provides benefits and advantages of versatility over the thin film. A hybrid circuit in a broad sense serves as a component on a PCB in the same way as a monolithic integrated circuit. The main difference between the two types of devices is in how they are constructed and manufactured. The components which cannot be used and included in the monolithic IC can be used in the case of hybrid circuits. The circuit designer has complete freedom in the whole choice of resistor value in thick film technology. Since the active and passive components are integrated into a silicon chip using fabrication process, the IC becomes a lot smaller.
Unlike conventional circuits which are assembled with the help of individual components, hybrid circuit manufacturer while working on microcircuits, are accomplished as a part of whole element formation. The entire circuit is formed and manufactured as a complete unit which avoids much of the cost of conventional circuitry where components are individually manufactured and assembled.
More Advantages of Hybrid Circuits:
Components such as capacitors of large value, crystals, inductors, etc cannot be included in a monolithic IC, can be used.
The composition and dimension of resistors can be selected to provide the desired values.
The circuit designer has complete freedom in his choice of resistor value in thick film technology.
