Scoring can be intimidating for the first time attempt. It is however an essential component and can be conducted simply for club-level use. Below is some guidance on the basics:
Left is a standard scoring sheet used for softball. While there are a lot of details, at a novice-level, you will only need to concern yourself with a few areas.
Box layout.
Beneath each innings box, each player is provided a box to record their batting performance during that innings. This box is broken down into quadrants to represent each base (1-4). Movement between bases may be recorded as a line (i.e. running from one to the other - shown below).
As per the image, you will need to insert:
the teams playing
the details of diamond and date
the players listed in their batting order (you can get this from the match sheet or directly from the coach).
The players' positions are listed to the left of their names. This may be listed as either an abbreviation of the position or (preferred) as per the position designation number (re below)
Left is the sheet with the positions numbered.
Players' performance at bat - recording an out:
Foul = F
Strike = X
Ball = .
Outs are numbered in the circle 1, 2, 3 per innings
Note – only the first two fouls will count as strikes (all fouls are still to be recorded)
So: Paul fouled the first pitch, had a ball for the second pitch, struck out on the third pitch and struck out on the fourth pitch – he was the first out.
Where a player is put out (for any other reason) simply put a number in the circle.
Batting:
John was next up to bat. He fouled the first pitch and hit the second – he made it to first base (drawn as a line to first base).
George batted next and got two strikes, on the third pitch he hit and ran to first base. John ran to second base as a direct result.
Richard hit the first pitch and ran to second base. Because of the hit, George ran from first base to third and John ran from second base to home plate. Because John made it home, the circle is colored in.
Changing players:
Draw a line through the player to be replaced and write in the player who will assume that position from the bench list. If players are just being reassigned positions, just cross out the position listing (beside the name) and change it with the new position.
If the ninth player is the first to bat for that innings, the second batter will be the first player. In this instance, the second (and subsequent) batter may be recorded in the same innings line.
Scoring the game:
After the innings, score all of the runs from that innings in the left half of the box. In the right half the collated total is recorded. Here, the team scored one run in the first innings but no runs in the second innings – a total score after two innings is 1.
At the completion of the game, final results are recorded at the bottom right of the sheet.
Please note that there are other ways to record results and complete the scoresheet. If interested you can complete the scoring courses that are run by Softball ACT. Other functions.
As the scorer the following should also be conducted (in conjunction with manager/coach responsibilities):
The home team (listed first in the draw) is responsible for filling out the team sheet (refer to manager)
Tell the other team of any changes prior to game recommencing
Tell the umpire of any changes (this may be done through the coach)
Confirm that the team is aware of any changes
Inform coaches and umpires when 5 runs are scored in an innings (where there is a 5 across rule employed)
Record the best on ground for both teams on the team sheet (3, 2, 1 votes)
Forward a copy of the summary sheet to the junior coordinator (ensure the sheet has the votes on it)
Support the manager (if required) in placing the team sheet in the red toolbox (located in the club house) on game day.
