Managing a team can be both challenging and extremely rewarding. Broadly the manager needs to be the conduit of a lot of information as well as being the point of contact on game day. Saying that, with a little preparation you can be well ahead of the game and enjoy watching the development of the players first hand.
From a basic approach, the manager's responsibilities include:
receiving and forwarding notifications of club and team requirements in a timely manner (Stack Team App; social media; emails)
keeping tabs on who is available to play on the game day (Stack Team App)
organising parental (or players) support for canteen duties, umpiring duties, fundraising
recording injuries
raising and forwarding team sheets
Registration for working with children.
All of these are discussed below.
This App is very handy and highly recommended for all managers to keep families informed of Club updates. It contains:
Coach, Manager and Scorer chats (where updates are provided through)
Team chats (where you can update families)
Schedules (where families can indicate their attendance to games for planning).
If anyone needs access to this, send them the link and allow them to raise an account. An admin will then provide them access.

This can be a difficult part of the managing a team. While the Club will provide managers and families a broad overview of sought after volunteers, it is important to support families' expectations in this regard as well as confirm their support. If explained upfront by the manager, expectations can be managed and reliance on the same people can be reduced.
It is key to outline to families:
what the roles are (canteen, bbq, umpiring, fundraising support)
who can do it (players and parents)
that there are few requirements if everyone is willing to help out
if support is not provided, additional fees/fines may need to be paid for by the Club (this will increase fees).
Injury - Softball is prone to injuries despite all efforts to avoid them. If an injury is incurred during authorised training or on game day by a registered member (player or support personnel), an injury form should be filled out - https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/cups/softballact/files/nvcoe5mayp1adugd.docx. Note that this form is a secondary priority after the provision of first aid (contact the canteen for the first aid kit/member or contact 000).
Incidents - if something occurs during the course of a game that is inappropriate (e.g. abuse), you or the coach may raise the concern with the umpire (if they are in blue) and they should handle the issue. Where there is no umpire (in blue), you can/should get hold of a Club official or the Junior Coordinator. They will provide support to you. If the incident, however, cannot be addressed there and then and does not involve a direct risk to individuals (physical or otherwise), an incident and protest report can be raised. Talk to a committee member (or the Junior Coordinator) for support.

If the incident involves any member of the Club, complaints should still be raised either through the report or (preferably) through the Club so that an investigation can be raised.
The team sheet is a requirement for all teams and can be used for risk management and reporting purposes by Softball ACT. Sheets will be provided to the manager/scorer at the commencement of the season (additional copies can be requested at any time)
It is the responsibility of the home team (the team mentioned first on the draw) to fill out the sheet prior to passing it onto the other team. This sheet can be filled out by the coach, scorer or manager.
The team list should be written in batting order (it can support filling out score sheets) and include positions (discussed in the scorer page). The sheet should also contain:
listed votes for best on ground (3, 2, 1) for each team (in the right-hand columns)
sign off by umpires
details of who won
notification of any intended incident/injury reporting.
The completed sheet should be photographed and forwarded to the Junior Coordinator and then the winning team is to place it in the red toolbox located in the clubhouse for further processing.
Capturing and forwarding the sheet with recorded votes to the Junior Coordinator will assist in determining the end of season best and fairest awards.
All volunteers over the age of 18 years are to be cleared and registered with a 'Working With Vulnerable People' card as part of the junior competition. The Club will provide guidance in regards to this each season. Managers are asked to confirm that such volunteers are aware of the requirement and that applications and processing can be conducted through Access Canberra - Working with vulnerable people (WWVP) registration (act.gov.au). As a volunteer organisation, applications will not cost applications where they are linked to the junior competition.
