Jocelyn Burch: Eyes on the Positive

By ELIZABETH WEDERSKI

To me, change is very important and it can help me grow into a better person. Everyone goes through different changes in life, and sometimes it can affect them a lot. I’ve been through a lot of change in my life, like joining a sport, changing schools, and plenty more that I’d rather not name. I leave schools every two years and it’s hard, finding new people who you think are your friends. When I first came to Saint Francis, I didn’t know what to expect. Sure the campus is beautiful but are the people the same way? Surprisingly people were nice. I expected the worse for some reason, that someone was going to talk bad about me and I was never going to fit in. Let’s be honest, I still don’t feel as though I fit in. There were friendly and outgoing people and there was the opposite. Some people are afraid of change, and I’m one of those people, change can be alarming because you don’t know what you are expecting or what life would throw at you, but you always have to be ready.

Like before, everyone goes through different changes in their life. For example, Mrs. Burch. She has been through a lot of change and one includes leaving her home to go to college. When she had to leave for college, she had to make her decisions and plans for herself. Mrs. Burch is an independent person, but going on her own was hard for her, she had to make her own decisions on her own without parental help. She wasn't used to this because her parents were with her. Mrs. Burch taught herself to be responsible and to not rely on her parents. She also went through technology changes, back when she was a child, there wasn’t emailing or texting.

In second grade, Mrs. Burch loved her second-grade teacher and often looked up to her. She stated that her teacher was there for her all the time, and her teacher inspired her to become a teacher. Mrs. Burch also said that her teacher was very positive in her life and looked towards positive people in her life. To Mrs. Burch, that inspired her, she wanted to share the world her positivity too. Positivity has always been a big thing in Mrs. Burch’s life and often looked towards prayer to help her. Mrs. Burch always tried to be a positive person to herself and her family. She believes that a positive mindset and not worrying about the things that stress you is important and keeps you being happy.

“Changes in life? I’ve been through various changes in life, as different stages, you know there’s an elementary school and you are kind of like hand-held through things, right? When you go to middle school, it’s a little changing and in high school, you are basically on your own. One of the biggest changes in my life was leaving my home to go to college. When you are on your own, it means making your own decisions, financial situations, you know academic decisions, and then from there moving onto the real world, those are all big changes in life. Through those changes, the world was changing also so we went through technology changes before we never had emails it was basically writing a letter you know. Then we went to email and now we have text messaging. Learning those things are big changes in my life. Then becoming more grown and becoming a mother, those are huge changes that you don’t anticipate. You can’t plan for those changes. Those are things that affected my life.”
