Delwin Deng: A Changing World of Diversity

By MASEN LUKE

Diversity is a topic that not many discuss often. You may wonder what's the point of diversity? To be honest, even myself wonders what’s the point of diversity. Living in Hawaii for my whole life, I was surrounded by a very diverse community. At school is everyone is different in many ways. If you look at it in a bigger picture, without diversity there would be no opportunities. There would be no difference, and without differences, there is no meaning of life. When I look at diversity as a bigger picture, you can see how important it is and how much it has changed and impacted the world. At the same time, it’s sad to see how our communities are changing, sometimes not for the better.

In the corner of Saint Francis on the second floor in Room 124 is Delwin Dang. He teaches Engineering, Robotics, and Math. Mr. Dang tells his story of about his experiences in life and how diversity impacts him through his life. He tells us how diversity helps our community and how it has changed through these past years. Mr. Dang moved to California to become an engineer for Boeing. When he moved to California and back to Hawaii, he saw how diverse the world truly was.

Mr. Dang has taken the knowledge of learning and experiencing the world of its true diversity.

“What diversity offers you is you the opportunity to go ahead and do very great different things. And things that may not be your specialty, but maybe someone else's specialty. So diversity is almost a necessity to have a functioning society that exceeds beyond its individual numbers. I think today's society is more diverse, then it was 30, 40 years ago. But at the same token, it’s lost some of the cultural, cultural components that existed, you know as an outgrowth plantation days where people were a lot more accommodating, and a lot more helping to each other. Today it seems that today people are a lot more, especially in neighborhoods, people aren’t as close as they use to be before.”
