Our research examines how psychological processes shape safety, relationships, behavior, and wellbeing in digital and AI-mediated environments. We organize this work across five interconnected research areas, integrating fundamental psychological inquiry with design, intervention, evaluation, and real-world implementation.
인간중심 디지털안전센터는 디지털 및 AI 환경에서 심리적 과정이 안전, 관계, 행동과 웰빙을 어떻게 형성하는지 연구합니다. 기초적인 심리 기제의 탐구에서부터 안전 설계, 개입, 효과평가와 실제 현장 적용에 이르기까지 다섯 개의 상호연결된 연구영역을 중심으로 연구를 수행합니다.
디지털 환경에서 발생하는 위해의 심리적·사회적 기제와 이를 둘러싼 안전 생태계를 연구합니다. 기술매개 젠더기반폭력(TFGBV), 비동의 친밀 이미지(NCII), 딥페이크, 사이버 괴롭힘, 디지털 자기검열과 같은 온라인 위해를 주요 주제로 다룹니다.
보호의 책임을 특정 개인이나 집단에 전가하지 않고, 피해를 경험하는 사람, 위해를 가하는 사람, 방관자, 플랫폼과 제도적 환경을 함께 살피는 전(全)생태계 관점을 취합니다. 위험인식, 통제감, 도움요청, 방관자 행동, 플랫폼 책임과 보호기제가 실제 이용자의 행동과 경험에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 탐구합니다.
We investigate the psychological and social mechanisms underlying online harm and the broader ecosystems in which digital safety is produced or undermined. Our work addresses technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), deepfakes, cyber-harassment, digital self-censorship, and related forms of online harm.
Rather than placing the burden of protection on any single individual or group, we take a whole-ecosystem perspective that considers people affected by harm, those who perpetrate harm, bystanders, platforms, and institutional environments. We examine how risk perception, perceived control, help-seeking, bystander behavior, platform responsibility, and protective mechanisms shape users’ experiences and actions.

We examine the psychological and relational dynamics that emerge between people and AI. Our work addresses attachment-like experiences with conversational AI, self-disclosure, hesitation and silence, the development and revision of trust, error and repair, reliance, and overreliance.
Rather than treating AI simply as a tool or equating human–AI relationships with human relationships, we investigate the psychological functions and relational experiences that emerge through repeated interaction with AI. We ask when these interactions support beneficial and safe engagement—and when they may create relational risks or undermine wellbeing.

We study how psychological theory and empirical evidence about user experience can be translated into the design of safer digital systems. Our work examines platform features, reporting and removal systems, redress mechanisms, age-appropriate design, policy, and governance.
A central question is whether people can recognize risk, seek help, report harm, intervene, and effectively use the protections that systems provide. By connecting psychological science with technological and institutional safeguards, we aim to develop human-centered Safety by Design mechanisms that work in real-world contexts rather than remaining abstract safety commitments.

We examine how digital technologies and online environments influence emotion, self-concept, relationships, mental health, and everyday adjustment. Research topics include digital stress and problematic use, social media and body image, loneliness and online engagement, gaming, online social comparison, and digital literacy.
Rather than treating digital exposure itself as inherently beneficial or harmful, we investigate the psychological mechanisms and contextual conditions that function as risk or protective factors. We use this evidence to inform prevention and intervention.

심리척도의 개발과 타당화, 프로그램 효과평가, implementation과 impact assessment를 통해 “무엇이 효과가 있는가”뿐 아니라 “누구에게, 어떤 조건에서, 어떤 경로를 통해 효과가 나타나는가”를 검증합니다.
연구결과가 학술논문에 머무르지 않도록 청소년, 부모, 교육자, 상담자와 지역사회를 대상으로 증거기반 교육과 예방 프로그램을 개발·제공하며, 학교·공공기관·기업·국제기구와의 협력을 통해 실제 환경에서 적용 가능한 개입을 연구합니다.
We develop psychological measures and evaluation approaches for studying digital safety and human–AI interaction, and translate research findings into education, prevention, and real-world programs.
Through psychometric development and validation, program evaluation, implementation research, and impact assessment, we examine not only whether an intervention works, but for whom, under what conditions, and through which mechanisms.
To carry research beyond publication, we develop and deliver evidence-based education and prevention programs for young people, parents, educators, counselors, and communities, working with schools, public agencies, industry, and international organizations to evaluate interventions in real-world settings.

The center’s current research agenda builds on a broader body of work in counseling psychology, vocational psychology, attachment and interpersonal relationships, and social and cultural psychology.
