The Human-Centered Digital Safety Center translates psychological science into meaningful real-world change.
Drawing on research into risk and protective processes in digital and AI-mediated environments, we develop education, prevention, Human-Centered Safety by Design, professional training, and community outreach initiatives—and evaluate whether these interventions work in practice.
Rather than placing responsibility for safety on individuals alone, we work across young people, families, educators, professionals, platforms, and communities to strengthen the broader conditions that support safer digital participation.
We develop evidence-based digital safety programs for young people navigating social media, gaming, generative AI, and other digital environments.
Our approach goes beyond avoidance-based safety messages to strengthen risk recognition, help-seeking, digital citizenship, bystander intervention, self- and peer-protection, and AI literacy.
We develop psychologically informed approaches that help parents support digital safety without relying solely on monitoring or control.
Key topics include age-related boundaries, protective self-efficacy, parent–child communication, gaming, social media and AI use, and collaborative approaches to digital safety.
We provide training and capacity-building for educators, counselors, youth professionals, and other practitioners responding to emerging digital risks.
Topics include online harm, deepfakes, NCII, cyber-harassment, suicide and self-injury risks in digital environments, and psychological safety in AI use.
We develop prevention and response initiatives addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence, NCII, sexual deepfakes, cyber-harassment, and related online harms.
Our approach does not place the burden of prevention on potential victims. Instead, we address perpetration, bystander responses, social norms, platform design, and reporting and redress systems together.
We develop evidence-based approaches to AI literacy, safety, and wellbeing, with particular attention to trust, reliance, self-disclosure, relational experiences, and the appropriate understanding of AI capabilities and limitations.
Our goal is neither uncritical adoption nor blanket avoidance, but psychologically informed use characterized by critical understanding, appropriate reliance, relational boundaries, and recognition and repair of AI errors.
We work with organizations to approach user safety as a design requirement rather than solely as a post-harm response.
Using psychological theory and user-experience evidence, we support work on reporting and redress systems, user journeys, defaults, age-appropriate design, trauma-informed design, and safety communication.
In collaboration with Meta, university student ambassadors build knowledge and practical skills related to digital safety, online harm, and healthier online interaction, and extend these messages to peers and younger users.
The Center contributes a psychological perspective to program content and activities, emphasizing behaviorally meaningful outcomes such as recognizing risk, seeking help, intervening when others are harmed, and using available platform safety tools.
In collaboration with UN Women, university student ambassadors are trained to deliver digital safety education to high school students, with a focus on preventing and responding to technology-facilitated gender-based violence and related online harms.
The program addresses TFGBV, NCII, deepfakes, cyber-harassment, and related risks through a non-blaming, whole-ecosystem approach that does not place responsibility for prevention on potential victims.
