The center’s flagship research unit, studying online harm, safety by design, and human–AI interaction and wellbeing.
The Human-Centered Digital Safety Lab studies online harm and human–AI interaction through psychological science. From a non-blaming, whole-ecosystem perspective that attends to victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and platforms alike, we translate psychological theory and empirical evidence into concrete safety design for platforms, policies, and AI systems. Our aim is to help people participate and relate more safely and healthily in digital environments.
Online Harm & the Digital Safety Ecosystem
We study technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), deepfakes, and cyber- harassment—taking a whole-ecosystem approach that attends to victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and platforms alike, rather than placing the burden of protection on any single group.
Human-Centered Safety by Design
Moving beyond abstract policy commitments, we develop human-centered Safety by Design mechanisms that embed psychological theory and user-experience evidence into platform features, reporting systems, and governance. To reduce harm and make protection work at scale, we use psychological evidence as our core methodology.
We examine the relational dynamics that emerge between people and AI—attachment-like experiences with conversational AI, hesitation and silence in AI-mediated dialogue, how errors and repair shape trust, and psychologically informed AI agents—through the lens of overreliance, relational safety, and human–AI wellbeing.
