Students will use their knowledge of gear ratios to build a Ping Pong Ball Launcher. Students will present an informal presentation of the design of their launcher.
Teacher will group students in groups of 2.
Ping pong ball for each group
Compound Gear Box (at least two levels)
Decide if you want two spinning wheels or a flywheel to launch your ping pong ball
Make sure the wheels are spinning outwards
Have one motor power each gear box
Design your Ping Pong Launcher.
Determine the gear box and gear combinations you plan to use
Sketch and label your design
Students in groups will work on building, testing, and improving their ping pong launcher.
Have all groups present their informal presentations about their ping pong launcher
Groups will demo their ping pong launchers and get three tries
Whichever group has the furthest launch distance gets something of the teacher's choosing (prize, extra credit, etc.)
