Your summer reading assignment is posted along with helpful links.
Dear Students:
In preparation for your English class, we would like you to read an independent reading book, or several articles, blogs and/or journals during the summer vacation. You will choose a book, articles, blogs and/or journals YOU HAVEN’T READ BEFORE. For each particular grade level, we have included some helpful links for picking out texts that you may be interested in reading.
You will not be tested on your book; instead, you should be prepared to share your work with your classmates and your English teacher. Your English teacher will give you credit for your work during the first couple of weeks of the 2020-2021 school year. We hope you will enjoy reading and want to discuss your readings with your friends.
Have a great summer and happy reading. Please check the school website for updates on the summer reading.
Sincerely yours,
2020 HSEF Summer Reading Assignment Committee (HSEF students, staff and administration)

HSEF Summer Reading Recommendations
Find one on your own by visiting a bookstore, the library or a friend’s bookshelf
After finishing the book, choose ONE option below
All projects should be completed using Google Docs
You must include your name, the date, the title of the text your writing about, the author and a project title.
Double space the entire doc, use size 12 and Times New Roman font (need some help with formatting?)
Choose one independent reading book (see Option E for an alternative to a book) and pick one of the following options:
Write a one-two page response: Briefly explain why you chose the book and then offer a well-developed response to what you read. This might be a personal, creative or academic response—you decide. The important thing is that it demonstrates the thinking that you did as a result of the reading. Whatever you do, do not summarize the book!
Write a letter to the author. Explain why you chose the book, what you enjoyed about it, what you disliked, what surprised you, what you thought the author wanted you to learn from the book, and any questions you have. 1-2 pages.
Write three poems/raps about the book. Choose 3 memorable moments from the book and summarize them in poem format. Each poem must be at least 10 lines long. You may include phrases from the book in your poems. Make sure each poem has a title. The poems do NOT have to rhyme.
Choose your 3 favorite passages from the book Copy them down AND discuss what you found appealing or interesting about them. 1-2 pages.
If your preference is to read a blog, journal or article, then write a one-two page response for each- a minimum of two blogs, journals or articles. For each blog, journal, or article, briefly explain why you chose the text and then offer a well developed response to what you read. This might be a personal, creative or academic response—you decide. The important thing is that it demonstrates the thinking that you did as a result of the reading. Whatever you do, do not summarize the reading!
