Your HPC Pointer wants to try a new topic aside from fashion advice this issue so let us know if you like it! This issue we are going to be talking about the evolution of the High Point Central men's basketball uniforms to honor an awesome season of men's basketball from your Bison! (Section written by Adam Honey and Hannah Sutherbee, edited by Catherine Miller)
Also important reminder for the lady Bison! Make sure to purchase a dress before prom on May 24th. If you are unable to purchase your own prom dress, visit the front desk and they will show you a selection of dresses from "Fallin in Love" boutique in High Point! The Pointer is excited to see some new looks at this year's prom.
Curt Mcdonald was the 1946 athlete of the year for High Point Central. Back when he played basketball for the Bison, uniforms looked a little different than they do now. Let's take a look...
Basketball uniforms looked something like this back in the day, let's unpack how they are so different from today.
Let's explain this with a timeline.
In 1946, High Point Central introduced shin guards for basketball players to protect them from other teammates or opposing players.
In 1950, Chuck Taylor's rose into fashion, especially for basketball players. They were marketed as the most supportive and structurally sound shoe for an athlete at the time. You can see Chuck Taylor's on the players feet in the image above as well.
In 1974 there was a new debvelopment on shoes. They turned closer to a more leather material for players, furthering their opinions on what is supportive for players.
In 1990, the trend of short shorts started to come to an end for basketball players. The baggier uniform was found much more popular with the growing trend of baggy clothes in the nineties.
A myth was uncovered around this time that long socks did not actually help with players cramps.
Around 2019 the baggy uniforms were ditched at HPC, and the team started to reflect styles closer to NBA uniforms. Uniforms are now simpler designs, classic, dri fit, and many players rock the Kobe shoes.
The Lebron shoes have not been found popular in high school basketball teams, but the Pointer predicts that when Caitlyn Clark comes out with basketball shoes, they will become popular with the women's baskeball team. The HPC basketball team is even getting new uniforms next year!
This is what the uniforms now look like! We hope you learned something new about your own school's uniforms.
