The HP ENVY series is a favourite for UK home offices and creative hobbyists alike. Whether you’ve just unboxed a sleek ENVY 6022e or an ENVY Inspire 7200, getting the connection right the first time is key to avoiding "Printer Offline" headaches later.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the official HP Smart setup, Wi-Fi troubleshooting, and how to get your ink ready for that first print.
Before touching any software, ensure your hardware is ready:
Remove Packaging: Take off all blue tape and cardboard spacers from the scanner lid and the internal ink carriage area.
Power Up: Connect the power cable directly to a wall outlet (avoiding extension leads for a more stable voltage).
Install Cartridges: Open the ink access door. Your HP ENVY will usually move the carriage to the centre. Insert the setup cartridges provided in the box until they click.
Load Paper: Pull out the main tray and adjust the paper-width guides before sliding it back in.
HP has moved away from traditional driver discs. The HP Smart app is now the primary tool for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
Download: Go to 123.hp.com on your laptop or mobile, or search for "HP Smart" in the App Store/Google Play.
Prepare for Pairing: Ensure your device's Bluetooth and Location Services are turned ON. This helps the app find the printer.
Add Printer: Open the app and click the Plus (+) icon. The app will search for your ENVY printer.
Connect to Wi-Fi: When prompted, select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password. The app will "handshake" the credentials to the printer.
Note: If your printer has a "Wi-Fi" light, it should change from flashing purple (Setup Mode) to solid blue (Connected).
During setup, you may be asked to activate HP+.
Benefits: You often get 6 months of Instant Ink included and an extra year of HP warranty.
Requirements: You must have an HP account, a continuous internet connection, and use only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
Printer Not Found: If the HP Smart app can't see your ENVY, reset the Setup Mode. On most ENVY models without a screen, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the back for 5 seconds until the status light glows purple.
Wrong Wi-Fi Frequency: Most HP ENVY printers support 2.4GHz and 5GHz. However, if you have a dual-band router with the same name for both, the printer may struggle. Try disabling 5GHz temporarily during setup.
Your printer doesn't have its own password; it uses your home Wi-Fi key. However, if you are using Wi-Fi Direct, you can print a "Printer Information Page" by pressing the Information (i) button on the printer. The Wi-Fi Direct password will be listed there.
Ensure you have the latest version of macOS and the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store. If it still fails, try adding the printer via AirPrint in System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
Yes, you can download "Easy Start" drivers from the HP Support website for a basic driver-only installation, but you will miss out on features like remote scanning and ink level monitoring.
After installing new ink, the printer usually prints an Alignment Page. Place this page face-down on the scanner glass and press the "Copy" button (Black or Colour). This ensures your photos and documents are perfectly sharp.
