I am a North Dakota native. I spent my teenage years hating it here, moved to Idaho for 10 years right after high school and came back with a new perspective. I wanted to be back with my family. Idaho has beautiful mountains and pine trees surround many of the highways. What struck me about Nodak was the endless miles of space. Upon witnessing it my lungs loosened and my shoulders relaxed. I felt like I had all the time and space in the world. I felt like I could breathe. There was so much open air around me. If you go to North Dakota. Take a backroad for a few miles and get out of the car. You won’t have to psyche yourself up or get into a meditative state to experience it. Just stand. Outside your car. Breathe.

The cemeteries that sit atop the silent prairies are solemn lots of land. Many sparsely populated. I never expected to find so much joy in visiting them, but every time I do my tour guide (usually a loved one) is sure to give me the best stories of those who have passed on. That may not be unique to North Dakota, but the silence. The silence with the backdrop of expansive landscape surely could be, and if that too is not unique then it is the people. North Dakotans tell the stories of their dead with care. With warmth. And if they find the dead were notorious they tell the stories with laughter and forgiveness. Sometimes with a long pause. We look at the stones and get lost in thought. If you visit a North Dakota cemetery, take the time to find a local that will accompany you. Their words will be worth the extra effort.
