Our focus is reflected in the Army JROTC mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” Army JROTC is an Academy and a CTE completer. It is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. JROTC prepares students for life.... not for the military. The cadets are more than just a group of teens; they are a family, and they stick together!
We take monthly field trips to competitions from Maryland to North Carolina. The Battalion hosts many leadership and social events, such as the Howard County JROTC Military Ball and visits to nursing homes and homeless shelters. Every summer, we take approximately 20 cadets to a regional JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (summer camp). In early August, we host a New Cadet Orientation and a Battalion Drill Workshop. In the spring, we co-host the Howard County JROTC Army Awards Celebration, where the best of the best receive community and battalion awards. We also have 9 Drill Teams, a Raider Team, an Archery team, a Drones Team, and a Leadership/Academic Team.
Army JROTC is an elective at Howard High School that is taught during regular school hours but includes many out-of-classroom activities. If you are in the class and join a team, practices will be held after school. More information will be provided in class.
