Stand-up comedy has hecklers, late nights, and club owners who pay in drink tickets. But when comedians discovered the gingham shirt club, they found material that ironed itself.
Jerry Seinfeld allegedly joked: “What’s the deal with gingham? It’s the only shirt that makes you look ready to mow the lawn and officiate a wedding.”
Ron White reportedly said: “I wore gingham once, and my wife called me ‘Mr. Picnic.’ We divorced three months later.”
Clubs from Austin to London now host “Check Night,” where audiences in gingham get half-priced nachos. Archival reviews show comics consistently bomb unless at least three plaid shirts are in the front row.
