With the introduction of technology into the education system there have been significant progress and changes in this field. From the introduction of the magic lantern and chalk board in the late 19th century, and the pencil in the early 20th, the classroom has taken on new meaning and new possibilities. Students were able for the first time to record and store information in their books, instead of rote learning which was practiced with the use of the slate board. Later we had the introduction of the radio and the film which brings about a combination of visual and audio. The film was then revolutionized into the overhead projector. Towards the end of the 20th century we have seen rapid development in the field of technology with the invention of computers and the internet (World Wide Web). With the advent of the digital age and everything becoming smart, from phones to television, to cars to classrooms.
The embracing of technology is more about integration than isolation. No longer should subjects be measured by contact time with the teacher but with the integration of technology learning becomes a continuous process even at home.
At Houston Secondary School we envision using technology to further a learning community where:
Students and educators will be guaranteed opportunities to use technology as an integral part of education.
Students are engaged in a challenging curriculum that is focused on inquiry-based, hands-on learning.
Students are comfortable using technology.
Students take responsibility for their own educational success.
No longer will the teacher rely solely on the traditional lecture/seat work method of instruction.
Therefore Houston Secondary offers its Technology Plan.
