Houston Secondary School was established in 1905 by the Methodist Church and managed by a board of directors comprising of distinguished members of the church who resided within the community. The school was designed to serve the community and started out with 70 students and was housed in the lower flat of the Church manse under the control of Ms Edna Millington (the first principal who served up to 1939).
Over the next few decades, there was a sharp increase in the enrolment of students and soon the entire building was taken over by the school both upper and lower floors. Not only was there an increase in numbers, but the curriculum was also expanded to include subjects like woodwork, book binding, gardening and craft. In 1963, Algebra and Geometry were also added to the curriculum.
As time elapsed, the building deteriorated and the church was unable to perform renovations. As such, in May of 1966, Mr. Joseph Vieira (Senior), a member of the community, donated to the Government of Guyana, as an independence gift, the parcel of land with a building on it for the purpose of a school. Due to the size of the donated building received, permission was sought and obtained for the senior students to be temporarily housed in the Houston Community Center building. The remaining students were kept in the donated house until the new existing structure was completed in late 1975, with its new name Houston Government School, which was submitted short lived as the name was changed again to .Houston Community High School with the launch of the Community High Schools programme later the same year.
With the launch off the Secondary School Reform Programme, in an effort to attain universal secondary education in early 2000s, the school began preparing students to participate in the CXC School leaving examination, and by 2010 the name was changed again to Houston Secondary School. After the change, the School was able to enter students (through their own school) to write the CSEC school leaving exams. Also, the Secondary Competence Certificate Program (S.C.C.P.) was introduced.
