In addition, we conducted interviews with students to gain a better understanding of the issues we should focus on. These interviews were conducted after our surveys, providing further insight into the survey results.
1. Have you ever felt burned out because of school? What did that feel like for you?
Burnout causes students to feel stressed, exhausted, overwhelmed, and unmotivated.
2. What parts of school usually cause you the most stress or pressure?
The workload from multiple classes, combined with expectations to complete all assignments to a high standard and the pressure of looming due dates, often causes the most stress.
3. Other than school, is there anything else that might add to your stress or burnout?
Extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, jobs, college applications, social life, and responsibilities at home can all contribute to stress and burnout.
4. When you start feeling overwhelmed, what do you usually do to handle it?
Students often talk to someone they trust, like friends or family, for comfort. Many also try to find a distraction, such as playing video games, reading, going on walks, exercising, or listening to music.
5. What do you think schools or teachers could do to help students avoid burnout?
Teachers could assign less work, considering that students have responsibilities in other classes. They could also be more mindful of students’ time outside of school when planning assignments and deadlines.
