Random Planetary "Projects"

"Stacking" isn't just for boosting the signal-to-noise of seismic data: The above image I took from my driveway in Dallas, Texas in April 2016 using an 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a digital camera. The image is actually a stack of ~300 high-speed digital photos acquired over a minute. The moon in the upper left is Europa; its shadow cast on Jupiter.


Below is another stack made a few minutes later... you can see how Europa has moved (it's now right in front of the upper-left edge of the planet). The Great Red Spot has also rotated further right. Putting several of these together, one can make movies of the moon orbiting the planet!
