The Hope Floats Initiative was created in direct response to the devastating flash floods along the Guadalupe River that claimed the lives of many children at Camp Mystic. Recognizing that access to properly fitted life jackets can mean the difference between life and loss, this program exists to ensure that no child is left unprotected during water-based camp activities or unexpected flooding events.
It began with the river.
The Guadalupe River, a place of joy, freedom, and childhood adventure, turned tragic when unexpected flash floods swept through its winding channels. Camps that lined its banks—a beloved part of Texas tradition—were caught off guard.Â
Among the loss was the unthinkable: the lives of children who simply came to learn, play, and grow.
The name Hope Floats reflects both the simplicity and strength of its mission. Life vests give more than buoyancy—they give hope: the hope of another day, another summer, another chance to grow up.
The goal is to get life vests in every cabin for every child at camps with water access.
We accept new and gently used U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in all child and youth sizes. Each donated vest is inspected, cleaned, and matched with a camp in need. Â
With your donation, you’re not just giving a vest.
You’re giving a child a second chance, a family peace of mind, and a community a layer of safety in unpredictable waters.
