Competitive basketball has been around for about 76 years and even before that there were always games that were run not through a league or a professional organization. This is called pick-up basketball which originated 130 years ago and was played in a small gymnasium under the supervision of the YMCA organization. . There is pick up basketball everywhere. Johnson Center at the University of New Mexico has basketball courts that are in good condition and are available to anyone who has a lobo id or is willing to pay 10 dollars to workout there. Pick-up basketball is very competitive because its all based on the integrity of who is playing. Everyone has to hold each other accountable for calling fouls and playing fairly.
The game of basketball is pretty simple. The main objective of the game is to score more points than the other team. To score a point you must shoot a baskebtall into the hoop that are on each sides of the court. One team starts off on offense and the other team has to try to stop them from scoring. Everyone has to dribble the ball, if you pick up the ball and run with it without dribbling that is called a "travel." It is crucial to work as a team so that the defense has to work a lot harder to gaurd you.
