Bishopric Message
We had such a great activity this past month with the young men and our missionaries. We are lucky to have missionaries who are so willing to join us as often as they do. I invited the missionaries to teach our young men how to share missionary discussions, especially since some of them—particularly our seniors—will soon be teaching lessons themselves (Cohen, even in Portuguese!). The missionaries did a wonderful job showing them how to teach with joy, how to extend invitations, and how to bear testimony. Elder Raucho even did a role play demonstrating how not to teach a lesson, which the young men got a kick out of. My vision was to then give them a real opportunity to practice by going into homes in the ward and teaching short lessons. This gives them a chance to interact with adults, look people in the eye, and extend real invitations. Thank you to those of you who have been willing to open your homes for this. At the time of writing this, the young men haven’t gone out yet, but I’m hopeful it will be a meaningful experience for them. (Don’t worry, young women—you’re not off the hook.) Our youth are phenomenal. It’s not easy being a teenager today, especially with the challenges that come from phones and social media—things we as parents didn’t have to navigate. I truly look up to them. Recently, as I was introducing a visitor to our priests quorum, I was struck by the strength we have even in our Priests Quorum. In that one room we had talented athletes, young men with lead roles in musicals, and even a priest who had just received his mission call and was ordained an elder that same day. But more important than any of those accomplishments, they are simply good young men. They’re not perfect—and they will make mistakes—but at their core, they are solid, capable, and striving to do what’s right. I hope that as opportunities come up to have them in your homes (which we plan to continue doing), you’ll take the chance to get to know them—who they are and what makes them tick. They are amazing.
