Bishopric Message

While serving in the Ogden Temple this past week, the newly called First Counselor to the Temple Presidency introduced himself by sharing a famous quote attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, " Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words".  What a profound thought! Is it truly possible to lead by example? Can our actions really speak louder than words and perhaps, even help to inspire, if not encourage, others to more fully embrace the Gospel and our Savior, Jesus Christ? Is it possible that the way we live the Gospel might actually reflect the level of commitment we have to keep the Lord's commandments and to keep & honor sacred covenants? By doing so, would others notice? Would it come across in a sincere and loving way and not a judgemental or self-righteous way? If so, would there grow a desire in others to become more Christlike themselves? While an explanation might help to connect the dots and add clarity to something, I'm not fully convinced of a better way to share your testimony or add your personal witness of the plan of salvation, our Heavenly Father, and his son, Jesus Christ than by "living" the plan.

I remember a personal experience I had, nearly 30 years ago. One day, while helping to provide a ride across town for the missionaries to teach a lesson to an investigator, I remember the missionaries explaining and expounding on concepts and principles of the gospel related to blessings and the joy that came from accepting the gospel and repenting . But, it was an entirely different feeling and experience to be present and witness hearts soften and lives change when individuals exercised a little faith and put it to the test. While serving as a missionary, some time after, I felt that I could describe that same feeling and experience as "miraculous", especially when entire families were changed. In all those instances, I vividly remember the spirit being so strong. Perhaps even more, I remember the feeling and desire of wanting more of that same joy in my own life. I have felt that distinct feeling many times since. I felt it when I was sealed to my family, while being sealed to my wife, at the birth of my children, at times when providing a blessing, at times during Sacrament and other church meetings, during sessions of General Conference, while attending and serving in the Temple, and many others. This feeling has been described many times, and in numerous ways. From the Book of Mormon, the prophet Lehi describes a tasty fruit, desirous above all others.

With this perspective, does how we live have significance to others? Do others even notice? What about our children? Does it even matter or make a difference? If so, are there any changes that may need to be made?  If you have felt or been moved by the spirit, then I would argue yes. When you know you know. In light of that, I testify that our Savior lives. He knows and loves you. This is his gospel and promised blessings and joy come to all those with the faith to live it. It's infectious, (in the best kind of way). May we all strive for that. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
