My design semantics is the combination of the playful and the minimalist. I hope to bring the element of surprise with my work. I am confident at finding links and making connections of narratives, cultures, and user behaviours. At the end of the day, I aspire to practice design as a living with the spirit of childhood retained to fuel my enthusiasm.

Project: Enabling Co-Presence

Renee Ackers, 2018

Co Supervisor: Juliette Anich

This project is a human-centered, participatory design project developed to explore the personal and mental health experiences of Forensicare patients. Embedded within Forensicare and the Thomas Embling hospital, I have designed an intervention that responds to the need for alternative communication rehabilitation for patients.

To support this intervention, I have developed a series of postcards. Which will provide a safe environment and conditions for all to write and express their feelings during their journey of hope. This can establish a beautiful connection which has created a culture shift in the practice of care and safety, by supporting all parties through diverse sensitive stages and circumstances. The postcards humanize dignity, by bringing back an element of normality through message expression. Understanding that nobody is perfect or has crystal clear communication 100% of the time. Time goes on and people misunderstand each other, which is normal. Communication is a working progress and a skill needed to be learned during the recovery of well being.

Employing Culture

Alexander Tatoulis, 2018

Co Supervisor: Juliette Anich

Embedded within Co-Health, I have designed, developed and tested a series of interventions which supports newly arrived displaced people in the capacity building of bi-cultural skills in order to gain meaningful employment.

Newly arrived displaced people experience barriers when gaining employment due to language skills and cultural understanding (Refugee Health Network, 2012). Access to meaningful employment has been identified as a critical barrier to seeking health care services within Australia (Australian Institute of Health and Wealthfare, 2016). My research identified that this could be alleviated by improving employment opportunities for refugee people.

Charles Skender, 2012

Charles Skender graduated from RMIT’s Industrial Design program in 2012. His work brings together art and technology in innovative and practical ways, while promoting minimal resource use. His design, Tank, is a shower monitor Installed between the showerhead and pipe, to collect information on the consumption habits of individual users. When the shower is in use, Tank displays the volume of water used, average consumption and amount of water saved on an LCD screen. The jury praised Tank for the ease with which it could be retrofitted, its ability to raise awareness of water use and its well resolved construction.
