The 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion's assignment was to sort and clear the two-plus year back log of mail in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) in Birmingham, England; Rouen, France; and Paris, France in 1945.
APO stands for Army Post Office. The post office handled military mail which included free postage for soldiers and the creation of Army Post Office (APO) numbers, to keep troop locations private. For obvious reasons, the War Department didn't want to release troop locations. To prevent military information from being disclosed, they also censored the mail.
The National 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion Day is September 16.
Private First Class Deloris L. Ruddock would have celebrated her 100th birthday on September 16, 2023.
