This Diwali……….A journey of teacher turned social worker

Myself Dr.(Hon) Anu Kalra resident of Panipat city Haryana , married to a wonderful loving soul and blessed with a son doing aerospace Engg. With touch of spirituality in daily routine following the quote “ Keep in touch with GOD while doing worldly deeds”.

I am working as HOD-Fine Arts in a renowned school of state i.e. DAV Public School , Thermal Colony , Panipat . Also I am contributing my services to Inner Wheel Club Panipat Midtown as an Editor and along with that I am a freelance Artist (Oil-Paintings).

Neither I am an entrepreneur nor a social worker however by grace of almighty and support of husband , I try to make little efforts for betterment of society by helping out physically or Financially through various projects of Factual NGOs , Charitable/Religious institutes specially through Inner Wheel Club Panipat Midtown.

I started my carrier as a teacher since 2001 and from a primary teacher to an art teacher and then from an art teacher to HOD with best institution ,which is remarkable. Really a mesmerizing journey is going on full of appreciations , acknowledgements , rewards and awards at Distt. , State and National level along as a teacher , a freelance Artist and for contribution to society . The awards like “POWERFUL WOMEN HARYANA 2022” by Dainik Bhaskar & LPSBOSSARD and Durga Shakti Awards at state level along with many more have boosted my morale.

About Diwali which is also known as ‘Deepavali’, which literally means rows (avali) of lights (deepa) in Sanskrit. This festival of lights is celebrated on the darkest night (Amavasya) of the Kartik month in the Indian calendar, and it symbolizes the vanquishing of ignorance (darkness) by knowledge (light). The festival of Diwali has many rituals, traditions, and stories associated with it. On the surface, these traditions may seem very mundane and insignificant but there is a beautiful meaning hidden behind each and every aspect of the Diwali celebrations.

For us Diwali starts with day of Dhanteras and continues till Bhaiya Dooj as schools are off during those days. From cleaning our home to a busy shopping day as Dhanteras is considered lucky to go to markets and buy gold or new kitchen items. Then starting decorating by putting up string lights and rangolis with other Diwali traditional decorations here. And on the special day clay oil lamps or diyas are lit and ritual worshipping the goddess Lakshmi is performed. The most auspicious time for worship (Puja) is 06:53pm to 08:16pm , this year. The worshipping is by offering flowers, fruits (water chestnuts, pomegranate, quince, and coconut) and to Goddess Lakshmi, then prostrating in front of the idol and joining your palms for prayers. In night we do have a get to gather in neighborhood and we do exchange gifts and have a large blessed meal after that .

I had never thought that I would be able to do some thing for society as from the first memories I have, I always believed that I was meant for something great—educating others. But with passage of time realized that A teacher should also accept her responsibility in the realization of our social objective, which implies that education should be related to the life, needs and aspirations of the people. From this point of view, it becomes important that the teacher becomes an active participant in Programs of community development . I think a teacher feels more of a social worker than a teacher playing three roles in daily schedule a teacher, parent and social worker and it is always good to offer a hand instead of a judgment as the more you care , the stronger you can be.
