Philippe modeled the WWII bust (Hope) from photos of his wife's grandfather, John Wesley Scott who was killed during the battle of the Huertgen Forest (between Belgium and Germany) in November of 1944. He was in one of the last round of men sent overseas to fight as he had 3 small children. He was 25 when he died. It is a very moving part of the family history as he lost his life fighting for not only our family here in the US but also unknowingly and indirectly for Philippe (and his family) in France who would become the father of his great granddaughters.
Though he was not from our area Philippe chose to use him as a model for family reasons but also because his granddaughter and great-granddaughters are members of the Honeoye community. The busts honor all those who fought in the 3 wars that are part of the memorial. Their titles were intended to reflect the imagined state of mind of the young men fighting in each of those conflicts.
To keep a bit of a subtle connection between the portraits (which speaks to the fact that generation after generation made these sacrifices for our country), Philippe used his brother-in-law (grandson of John W. Scott) as a model for the Civil War bust and a combination of men in the family for The WWI soldier.
