PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The residence was designed to blend into the Ridgemar neighborhood of ranch style homes. The symmetrical design features a long, linear front facade with smaller scaled, protruding gable face elements. The two mature street trees frame the walk path up to the front door. The design of the residence is simple and understated.
The layout of the structures was driven by the homeowner's desires. The homeowner presented the architect with two priorities for the design: to create a house that was centered on the large oak tree at the back of the property and a 3.5 car garage. After initial studies, it was decided the only way to save the mature oak was to create a two-car rear facing garage and a detached accessory structure with a garage and gym. This would mean that the project would require a variance as the City of Fort Worth Zoning Ordinances do not allow for two garages on one lot. Working with neighbors and the city, the variance request was approved.
The house has a classic layout of all bedrooms on one side of the house and the office and garage on the other. The primary suite was pushed to the rear of the lot to create visual and auditory separation from the guest rooms. The guest bedrooms have a jack-n-jill style bathroom. In between the two sides of the residence is the open kitchen, dining, and living space.
The overall mass of the house is developed around a 10-foot plate height with all windows and doors to be 8ft tall. This simple and clean design allows for massive windows providing views to the 4 mature trees on the lot. The gabled roofs have brick all the way up to the peak. The living room features two sets of sliding glass doors that provided access to the 40-foot-long covered porch. The covered porch is both heated for the winter and features automatic screens for insects.
The ideas of increased natural light, better flow for entertaining spaces, and owner privacy helped us filter through options and narrow down the plan. Once the layout was defined, we focused on the details of creating a home that would make life living in this house as easy and organized as possible. Some features created were a suitcase storage area in the closet, a packing table in the closet, a Christmas tree closet, and additional conditioned garage storage for AV and work supplies.
The role of the architect in this project was to capture the desires of the homeowner and create a design that blended all desires seamlessly, create a set of permit drawings, collaborate with the structural engineer for framing plans, and utilize three-dimensional cabinet design to create a set of drawings for the custom millwork.
The architectural portion of this project from start to finish was three months. Every decision was made quickly, which is attributed to fantastic communication with the homeowners. The construction portion of the project took twelve months, which is quick for this level of finish and care. The success of this project is due to collaboration between all parties: architect, engineer, homeowners, interior designer, and contractor.
