Verify Compulsory Age
Determine if your young person reaches 6 years old by September 1st.
Define the Supervisor
Confirm that you (parent/guardian holding a high school diploma/GED) are serving as the legal homeschool supervisor.
Draft Educational Objectives
Outline objectives by subject area (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health/PE, Safety, Art/Music).
Obtain Health Records
Gather immunization records and required dental/physical exam forms (or sign medical/religious/moral exemption).
Special Education Approval (If applicable)
If your young person has an IEP, obtain written approval of educational objectives from a certified special educator or psychologist prior to filing.
Notarize Affidavit or Complete Unsworn Declaration
Complete and notarize the Home Education Program Affidavit or Unsworn Declaration (and attach the HSE Student Info Sheet if in SDP).
Submit Registration Packet
Submit copies of paperwork to your school district office before starting homeschooling.
Natural Creativity Compliance Check
Complete Natural Creativity Center’s beginning-of-year compliance check.
Notarize Affidavit
Complete and notarize the Home Education Program Affidavit or Unsworn Declaration (and attach the HSE Student Info Sheet if in SDP).
Update Objectives
Prepare educational objectives for the new academic year.
Check Medical Deadlines
Secure updated health/dental forms if young person is entering Grades 3, 6, 7, or 11.
Submit Renewal Packet by August 1st
File updated notarized affidavit/declaration and objectives with your school district by August 1st.
Set Up Portfolio Tracking
Open a fresh log for daily attendance (180 days or 900/990 hours) and reading/activity materials.
Review High School Credits (If applicable)
Verify young person progress toward required graduation credits (4 English, 3 Math, 3 Science, 3 Social Studies, 2 Arts/Humanities).
Natural Creativity Compliance Check
Answer Natural Creativity’s annual beginning-of-year compliance questions to confirm filed status.
Standardized Testing (Grades 3, 5, 8)
Complete an approved standardized test (or notify local public school principal by January for free testing).
Assemble Portfolio Work Samples
Gather ~10 work samples across subjects (writing, worksheets, creative work, or project photos).
Finalize Logs
Confirm total attendance days (min. 180 days) or hours (min. 900 elementary / 990 secondary) and complete reading/activity log.
Schedule Evaluation
Book an evaluation with a certified PA teacher (e.g., Teresa Giardina).
Complete Evaluation Meeting
Conduct young person interview and portfolio review to obtain the signed Home Education Evaluation Certification.
Submit Certification by June 30th
Email the signed Evaluation Certification to your school district (e.g., homeschooling@philasd.org for SDP) prior to June 30th.
Optional Transcript Update
If managing a high schooler, update coursework and credits on FastTranscripts.com or your personal transcript file.
