Participating in the SEA Teacher Program was a truly valuable and life-changing experience. However, like all programs, there is always room for improvement to make it even better for future participants.
Firstly, I would recommend extending the preparation phase before departure. Having more orientation sessions, especially focused on practical teaching methods, intercultural communication, and managing classroom challenges, would help student-teachers feel more confident and better prepared once they arrive in their assigned countries.
Secondly, while the cultural immersion aspect was wonderful, I believe the program could include more structured opportunities for cultural exchange โ such as joining local family dinners, visiting community events, or even attending local language classes. These activities would not only deepen our understanding of the host country but also help us feel more connected to the local people and way of life.
Thirdly, I suggest that there be clearer guidelines and expectations shared with both the host schools and the student-teachers. This can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure a more consistent experience across different placement locations. While flexibility is important, knowing what is expected in terms of teaching hours, responsibilities, and support would make the transition smoother.
Lastly, I think future SEA Teacher participants would benefit greatly from peer-sharing sessions โ where students from previous batches can give real-life advice, share their stories, and answer questions. Learning from someone who has already walked the path can help reduce anxiety and build realistic expectations.
Despite these suggestions, I am deeply grateful for every part of the experience. The SEA Teacher Program has opened my heart and mind, and I believe these small improvements could make a big difference in helping future participants shine even more brightly in their own journeys.
