Beersheba BD Well of the oath. The home of Abraham (Gen. 21:31), Isaac (26:23), and Jacob (28:10); so called from the covenant Abraham made here with Abimelech, king of Gerar (21:31). It was afterwards in the tribe of Simeon (Josh. 19:2) and was regarded as the southern limit of Israel (Judg. 20:1; 1 Sam. 3:20). The district contained much rich pasture land.
Gen 21:31 Wherefore he called that place Beer-sheba; because there they sware both of them.
Gen 26:33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.
