Gethsemane Bible Photos: This photograph of an aged olive tree was taken at a traditional site of the Garden of Gethsemane. The Savior prayed near here after leaving the upper room on the night of His betrayal.
Significant Events: Here Jesus Christ began to suffer for the sins of mankind (Matt. 26:36–44; Mark 14:32–41; D&C 19:16–19). Following His prayer He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, and His disciples temporarily forsook Him following His arrest in the garden (Mark 14:50). (See BD Gethsemane.)
Gethsemane BD: The garden, across the brook Kedron, on the slope of the Mount of Olives, to which the Lord went on leaving the upper room on the night of His betrayal (Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32; Luke 22:39; John 18:1). An old tradition identifies it with a garden still existing some 250 yards from the east wall of the city.
Matt. 26:36: Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Mark 14:32: And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
Luke 22:39: And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
John 18:1: When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
