Bible Photo&Explanation: Significant Events: Jonah went to Joppa to take a ship to Tarshish (Jonah 1:1–3). Joppa was the seaport that Solomon and later Zerubbabel used when bringing timbers from the cedar forests of Lebanon to build their temples (2 Chr. 2:16; Ezra 3:7). Here Peter raised Tabitha, also known as Dorcas, back to life (Acts 9:36–43). Peter also had the vision of the clean and the unclean animals, revealing to him the need to begin the ministry among the Gentiles (Acts 10). Orson Hyde arrived here to dedicate the Holy Land in 1841. (See BD Joppa.)
2 Chron 2:16 : And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.
Ezra 3:7 : They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
Jona 1:3 : But Jonah rose up to flee
unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
Acts 10 : There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. 3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 ¶ On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:...
Philistines BD : In the Old Testament, a tribe that originally came from Caphtor (Amos 9:7) and occupied the rich lowland on the Mediterranean coast from Joppa to the Egyptian desert before the days of Abraham (Gen. 21:32). For many years there was a military struggle between the Philistines and the Israelites. Eventually Palestine, the name of the Philistine territory, became a familiar title for all of the Holy Land.
Sharon BD : The maritime plain, about 10 miles wide and 50 miles in length, extending from Carmel to Joppa, celebrated for its beauty and its flowers (1 Chr. 5:16; 27:29; Song 2:1; Isa. 33:9; 35:2; 65:10; Acts 9:35).
