In childhood or adolescence, Stargardt's disease is most commonly diagnosed. It is a form of macular degeneration that is genetically inherited. Central vision loss triggers Stargardt's disease. Early-onset macular degeneration, Stargardt's macular dystrophy, adolescent macular degeneration, or fundus flavimaculatus are also referred to.
The degeneration of photoreceptor cells located in the macula, the middle region of the retina, causes vision loss. The retina is found on the eye's back wall. The tissue of the retina is very sensitive. It is responsible for receiving light and then transforming it into an electrical signal which travels to the brain through the optic nerve to be processed into images.
