GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a digestive condition that affects the lower esophageal sphincter i.e. the ring of muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. While somebody may experience acid reflux or heartburn, there are a few groups of people that are more likely to have disorder issues.
Pregnant women often suffer from chronic heartburn, which can turn into GERD. It’s likely to occur in people who are overweight or smokers. Gastroesophageal reflux can also occur in people who are exposed to second hand smoke.
Frequent and constant burning pain in the chest, stomach, or throat is one of the primary indications of GERD. Less common symptoms are chronic coughs, regular bouts of bronchitis, asthma, nausea, sore throat, deep voice or changes in the voice.
