For this project, we had to work in groups to research and compare/contrast different global communities and their use of technology. I chose Maldives and my partner chose Japan. These two countries were opposite each other.
Introduction: For this project I had to research my choice of country. I chose Maldives because that country has been on my list to countries that I want travel to. I learn a lot about Maldives through the research. I learn that their internet access is restricted or limited and that its religion is officially Islamic State.
Population/Demographics:
Native Maldivians also called Maldives Islanders are the Dhivehi people, and they comprise most of the population.
Maldives has seen a population decrease since 2017.
Maldives ranks 130 compared to all countries in Population Growth for the year 2021.
The population of Maldives is 544,164 (2021 est.)
They descend from settlers who came to the islands from southern India and Sri Lanka to the north.
28.8% of the population lives in rural areas.
Spoken Languages:
Dhivehi (official, dialect of Sinhala, script derived from Arabic),
English (spoken by most government officials).
French, German, Russian and Chinese are also used at the resorts.
Climate/Geographic location:
It is located Southern Asia, group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, south-southwest of India
Geographic Coordinates (3 15 N, 73 00 E)
Monsoon season occurs from May through November in the southwest, and January through March in the northeast.
During these periods the rainfall is abundant
Dry seasons occur from December through April in the southwest, and April through December in the northeast.
Technology Usage & Access:
Internet access may be limited or restricted in the Maldives.
There are two ways to connect to the Internet: wirelessly, using Wi-Fi, and wired, using an Ethernet cable or a phone cord.
Telephone voice services, cable TV and Internet services are all available across the capital, Male. Other islands have at least access to basic telephone services.
Technology Culture:
The Internet was introduced in the Maldives in 1996
Not everyone has access to the intern nor use it.
Wireless connectivity is available in some outer spots of the island. This service can be accessed at a cost, and it is necessary to have a portable computer with a network card.
Location's digital divide:
Almost all mid-range and luxury hotels will have Internet access.
The hotel may have Internet access in each room, or only in a common area in the lobby. If someone accesses the Internet in their room, they may be charged for it, but if they access it in the lobby, it will often be free.
Urban Areas are more accessed to the internet and use high speed internet than the rural areas.

The global project helped me learn more about the country that I wanted to visit. My partner and I collaborated through texting and meeting at the library. Also, we collaborated in class and we did most of our work in class. We share our PowerPoint and our research documents. One interesting fact that I learned about Maldives is that it is the smallest country in Asia. The Maldives is an officially Islamic State, with every Maldivian required to be a Muslim by law. One other interesting fact is that Maldives is the flattest country in the world.
