Google Arts & Culture Geography Expeditions

For my mobile learning activity this week, I chose to explore educational augmented reality (AR). I already love the Google Arts & Culture app/website, so I was excited to be able to use it for a geography lesson. They have wonderful online art museum tours and now they have created geography expeditions where you can explore different places all around the world. I love this feature because it allows students to fully visualize and immerse themselves in the places they are learning about - all from their classroom! Students are able to connect with classroom content when they can explore these geographic locations.

Evaluating Google Arts & Culture

  1. What kind of hardware is required?

Any computer with a web browser to access https://artsandculture.google.com/ or an iPhone/iPad/Android smart phone to use the Google Arts & Culture app

Google Arts & Culture is open for nonprofit institutions, museums, galleries with copyright-free content that they want. to share

  1. What is the cost?

Free!

Falling under Google, Arts & Culture does collect user information to generate targeted ads. Google collects information like the terms you search for, videos you watch, views and interactions with content and ads, voice and audio information, purchase activity, people with whom you communicate or share content, activity on third-part sites and apps that use Google services, and Chrome browsing history you have synced with your Google account.

  1. What is the documentation like? Are tutorials easy to find and follow?

Yes, tutorials are easy to follow. There are tutorials specifically for teachers on how to use Arts & Culture, as well as tutorials on how to use interactive features on the website or app.

  1. Does the tool allow for collaboration or ownership of work created?

On Arts & Culture, students are not creating work, they are researching and exploring. Students can use the information they learn on Arts & Culture as a stepping stone to to further their research or to create a display of their knowledge out of.

Yes, students learn how to navigate tools such as digital maps and Google Earth which are always getting more sophisticated.

  1. Is the tool something students might use again?

Absolutely! Arts & Culture is constantly updating its art database, online exhibits, online expeditions, and educational games.

Yes, by becoming comfortable to tools such as Google Earth through Arts & Culture, students can build a foundation of their skills to work towards building their own Google Earth digital experience or project.

  1. Is it easy to test the experiences created?

Yes, teachers can easily go through Arts & Culture expeditions and exhibits to make sure they are what they would like to use in the classroom. Since you can use the site on your computer or smart phone app, it is even more accessible.

  1. Can students work collaboratively?

Arts & Culture does not have capability for group/partner work, but students can share a device where they can explore the site together.

3 Ways to use Google Arts & Culture in the Classroom

  1. As an entire class, go on a "virtual field trip" to a museum related to classroom content. This tool can be used to access museums and collections you would usually never be able to go to due to distance and funding. For example, explore the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The teacher can guide students through the museum and click on artworks to learn more about them.

  2. For a fun, interactive music lesson, students can use Blob Opera to create their own songs and experiment with sound.

  3. If your school has a virtual reality headset (which it might not, but we can dream!), allow students to explore VR videos related to your classroom content using the 360° video category.

Google Arts & Culture Lesson Idea

Grade Level/Class:

Eighth grade, World Geography

Standard of Learning:

WG.7B: The student will analyze the characteristics of the European region by describing major physical and environmental features.

Digital Learning Integration Standard:

Knowledge Constructor (KC) A: Students practice and demonstrate the ability to effectively use research strategies to locate appropriate primary and secondary digital sources in a variety of formats to support their academic and personal learning and create a research product.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will know the different geographic features that exist on the European continent.

  • Students will understand that the geography of a certain place affects the way people live.

  • Students will participate in a Google Arts & Culture AR expedition with a partner.

Lesson Idea:

To learn about the different geography throughout Europe, students will work in pairs and go on a Google Expedition to a European location of their choice. They will take notes during their expedition in order to answer the following discussion questions:

  1. Where in Europe are you exploring?

  2. What does this landscape look like?

  3. What geographic features do you see?

  4. How do you think the geography affects the way people live here?

After students have gone on their expeditions, the class will have a group discussion where they share about the different places they visited as well as the answers to their discussion questions.

Assessments:

The teacher will use multiple formative assessments during this lesson. The teacher will gauge student learning through multiple formative assessments. Students will fill out a warm-up and wrap-up exit ticket. The teacher will walk around the classroom as students work to observe their learning. Lastly, students will be given the chance to share their learning with the whole class.
