What Should I Know About Camino?

  • Camino is not a substitute for the Church. It is a means of renewing Christians in their faith, that they might more effectively serve their Church. Camino is a Spanish word meaning "way." Thus a Camino in Christianity is an experience in "a way of Christian faith."

  • The Camino movement originated as "Cursillo" (meaning "short course") in Majorca, Spain, in the 1940’s as a means for reviving Christian commitment. Though originally a Roman Catholic movement, is has become a worldwide ecumenical movement in Christianity.

  • Camino is open to both laity and clergy, married or singles. Men and women attend consecutive weekends with the men’s weekend preceding the women’s. Married couples make a joint commitment to attend in order to share the Camino experience.

Who Will Be at Camino?

  • People from all walks of life and many different churches

  • The all-volunteer team of laymen and laywomen who spend weeks together preparing themselves as servants for the Camino Weekend, becoming a Community of Christ

  • Spiritual Directors - - clergy who serve as part of the teams

What is Expected of Me?

  • Be prepared for Fun, Food and Fellowship

  • Be open to others and the experience of the Weekend

  • Be curious enough - - thirsty enough - - to commit three days of your life totally to Christ

What do I need to do to attend a weekend for the first time?

  • Every person attending has a sponsor, who is someone who has previously attended a Camino weekend. The sponsor can provide you with more details about the weekend, handle the application process, and provide your transportation to and from the weekend.

  • Camino is not intended as a therapy for mental illness or life crisis including marital difficulties; the vast majority of workers at a weekend are lay people and are not trained in counseling. However, personal relationships are often improved when someone mends their relationship with God and other Christians. Persons undergoing emotional stress or recent crisis are encouraged to consult with their pastor to see if this is a good time to attend a Camino weekend.

  • Our weekends are hosted in churches and our sleeping rooms are generally in classrooms. You will be responsible for your own bedding (twin size cot or air mattress and bedding or sleeping bag), towel, and toiletries. Yes, there are showers.

  • Bring casual, comfortable clothing and allow for temperature variations.

  • Please leave your computers, phones, and watches at home to retreat from daily distractions. In case of emergencies, a phone will be available to you, and your sponsor will let you know the weekend emergency contact number for your family.
