Mr. Aaron Poteat

Band Director

Hey there. I'm the guy on the left. I would like to take a minute and tell you a little about myself since I am likely your current or future band director...

I am a 1997 graduate of Appalachian State University where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. While at Appalachian I took advantage of all the great performing opportunities available. I served as a section leader in the ASU Marching Band ("North Carolina's Band of Distinction) for 4 years, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Trombone Choir, and various small ensembles.

I became band director at Heritage Middle School in 1999 where I am currently serving in my 25th year. Since coming to Heritage our bands have received many Excellent and Superior ratings at various contest and NC MPA performances. I love serving the Valdese, Drexel, and Rutherford College communities through teaching music. There are so many life skills that can be taught through band. Teamwork, self-discipline, work ethic, and being responsible are just a few examples of what can be achieved while working towards musical excellence.

Outside of school, I serve as Choir Director/Worship Leader at First Baptist Church of Valdese. I hope my students will find ways to share their musical gifts in the community as well. The musical skills you learn in school can be carried with you on into your adult life.

As you can see in the picture I am father to two boys Addison (21) and Ethan (14), and husband to my beautiful wife Kristy. Support from my family is important. I know your family supporting and encouraging you to learn an instrument in band means a lot. I hope to help you in the classroom to be a successful musician and make your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and whoever you consider family proud.

If you are a future student or parent I look forward to meeting you in person. If you are a returning band member I can't wait to see what this year will bring. For those who I've taught in the past, I can't wait to find out about all of the magnificent things you've accomplished.
