Self-Portraits - Roy Lichtenstein
After looking at the cartoon style artwork of Roy Lichtenstein, students created an energetic self portrait complete with a speech or thought bubble. Lichtenstein's signature Ben-Day dots and vibrant colors finished off the piece.
Self-Portraits - Silhouette
After carefully tracing a side profile photograph, students brainstormed imagery that goes along with characteristics of their personality. People, places, objects, animals, logos, text, and landscapes were just a few of the ideas that helped create an interesting composition. Drawings were finished off with colored pencil.
Perspective Still Life
8th grade students used their 1 and 2 point perspective knowledge to draw small Lego sculptures. Black and white charcoal helped to show value and contrast.
Design - Jasper Johns
Inspired by Jasper Johns' 1961 piece titled '0-9', 8th grade students used an overlapping method to create an interesting number composition. Three numbers were arranged forward, backward, and upside down along with a variety of circles to fill in any open spaces. A watercolor color scheme was chosen to fill in all spaces.
Watercolor Landscape
After looking at illustrator Jen Aranyi for inspiration, students created their own watercolor and sharpie landscape. Glass jars and bottles made for an interesting outline for our compositions. Many watercolor techniques were applied such as blended washes, gradient washes, salt for texture, blotting, and wet on wet painting.
Ceramics - Slab Bowl
These slab shapes bowl were challenging to make but the final results were so beautiful and unique! Students sketched out different shape ideas and made a cardboard template of their most interesting design. Multiples shapes and sizes were cute out of slabs and arranged in a shallow bowl. Scoring and slipping to attach pieces was extra important for this project. Glaze was the final step in the process.
Ceramics - Box with Lid
Using the slab method, 8th grade students in Ceramics constructed a themed box. Each side of the box needed to include some type of texture or added clay element. The last step in our process was to cut the top off to ensure a snug fit. Glazing really enhanced some of the great details!
