Landscape
Using their knowledge of space, students created a 3D cardboard landscape focusing on foreground, middle ground, and background. Cardboard pieces were layered to show depth, painted black for contrast, and finished with chalk pastels details to make everything pop.
Still Life
Before starting their final drawings, students created value scales and practiced drawing 3D forms such as spheres, cubes, and pyramids. First trimester students looked at photos of ice cream cones for reference, while second trimester drew their own origami creations.
Printmaking
For this printmaking project, 6th graders explored monoprinting with a Gelli plate. Gel printing plates look and feel like gelatin, but they are a durable and reusable slab that you can use to print on. Paint is rolled on to the surface and a variety of stamps and stencils can be added to make a "print" by pressing paper on the Gelli plate to make an impression. Once students had a collection of prints, we used them to create a cactus collage.
Ceramics
Using Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Irises, and Almond Blossom paintings for reference, each student created a ceramic tile that then became part of a the larger piece. Clay could be added in the form of coils or slabs, or subtracted to create texture.
Coil Pottery
Coiling is a method of pottery making in which pieces of clay are rolled into thin snake like forms and shaped into different designs. Students created coil bowls by attaching different types of coils to each other and then pressing the entire shape into a rounded form.
