Students pursue theoretical, experimental, or teaching research under the supervision of a Capstone Advisor – ordinarily a member of the MAMS Department faculty. The courses satisfying the Capstone requirement are MATH 351, MATH 352, and/or STAT 395.
Capstone projects may be completed under any faculty member at CWRU, not just in MAMS, but the project itself must be in the mathematical sciences. The project does not have to be original research.
In order to register, a student must first obtain the consent of a Capstone Advisor. Students are strongly encouraged to begin well in advance of registration to initiate discussions with a potential Capstone Advisor. Ask your favorite MAMS teacher — or just ask around!
Best Advice: Start looking for a Capstone Advisor in the Spring of your third year.
Before granting approval, an advisor may require a Capstone Proposal outlining the goals and the expected background, methodology and time frame of the project.
A very detailed sample form is here (under construction).
Forms are not required for any purpose other than to make clear the expectations between advisor and advisee. Agreements based on hints, allegations, and hearsay are totally fine if both parties are satisfied.
Students enrolled in MATH 351, MATH 352, or STAT 395 may present their capstone project at the

A poster is not used in the MAMS Capstone Symposium, but is required for Intersections!
The MAMS Capstone Symposium is an annual Spring-semester event where students present their Capstone projects to the MAMS community. Presenters use professional tools such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or preferably LaTeX (Beamer) to showcase their work.
"Chalk talks" can also be given. But this is very nontrivial. See here for a guide.
Each talk lasts 20 minutes, with up to 10 minutes for audience questions. Location and schedule are announced toward the end of the semester.
Light refreshments are provided.
An additional Fall-semester symposium may be held as needed.
